Enhancing Communication With Dementia Patients: A Guide For Caregivers

Communicating with a senior with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia can be a challenging task. Dementia not only causes confusion and memory loss but also leads to changes in mood, thinking, and behavior. One of the less recognized symptoms is a significant decline in speech and language abilities.

handscross

This combination of cognitive changes often makes it increasingly difficult for those living with dementia to stay oriented to time and place, think rationally, control their emotions, and clearly articulate their needs and concerns. This can result in increased confusion and frustration for both seniors and caregivers.

Consequently, here are some communication difficulties outlined below as well as ways to deal with this.

Communication Difficulties In Seniors With dementia False Accusations by Dementia Patients

Seniors with Dementia sometimes falsely accuse people, including family members and caregivers, of things like theft and abuse. It’s crucial to remember that seniors with dementia tend to make these accusations because their brain is trying to make sense of their confusion and memory loss. Instead of confronting these false accusations, validate your senior’s feelings and empathize with their situation.

Inappropriate Comments and Insults

Seniors with Dementia can cause a decrease in impulse control, leading to a loss of social filter. Dementia patients may insult others, use obscenities, or make inappropriate remarks. In such situations, it’s essential to remain calm and take the senior away from the situation causing them to act out.

Disorganized Speech

Dementia can also hamper the speech of seniors. Seniors with dementia can experience difficulties with word finding, poor hearing comprehension, and fragmented sentences. The best way to help seniors is to move around with them and help them find what they are looking for.

Each senior with dementia has unique symptoms. You need to be patient while trying to find solutions to them in terms of communication. Once you find some solutions, make sure that they align well as the disease progresses because verbal communication becomes much more difficult in later stages. Make it a habit to communicate with seniors with dementia no matter how uncomfortable you become.
