Tips To Find Enriching Activities For Seniors With Dementia

The family members and caregivers often struggle to come up with exciting and enriching activities for seniors with dementia. No doubt that keeping a senior with dementia or Alzheimer’s can be a daunting task for many people out there but it is crucial to maintain their physical and emotional well-being.

The activities should be such that seniors should themselves feel like participating and the ones that fit their changing abilities. Consequently, here are some guidelines to find such activities easier for seniors with dementia.

Tips To Find Activities For Seniors With Dementia

Take note of senior interests

The first crucial thing to bear in mind when finding activities for seniors with dementia is to keep their interests in mind. Go into the past and figure out the activities which they liked the most. It can be anything such as gardening, playing, cooking, crafting, reading, listening to songs, or anything else. As seniors age, hobbies usually take a backseat because of the physical and mental challenges they might be dealing with. Consequently, find out the activities that interest them the most and encourage them to participate.

Encourage them for physical exercise

The mobility and cognitive issues of seniors make it extremely difficult for them to indulge in a physical exercise routine. Instead, seniors with dementia begin to wander because of a lack of exercise. So, ensure to take seniors out for a daily walk to get some fresh air and improve their mobility. Doing physical activity improves agitation and sleep patterns among seniors.

Make room for social interaction

Due to the decline in physical and cognitive abilities of the seniors, family members think that they might not be interested in talking to people but this is not so. The seniors still need to interact with the others in the community. Consequently, you can ask their mutual friend or relative to take them out for lunch to provide some change to the seniors with dementia. But this might not be true about all seniors as some get frustrated too when in large crowds. Bear things in mind when planning an outing for a senior with dementia.

Come up with something meaningful

Instead of opting for activities aimed at simply passing the senior’s time, choose meaningful activities. The activities should be such that the seniors enjoy doing them at the moment. For instance, there are plenty of seniors with dementia who find meaning in folding laundry or snapping vegetables for dinner. It makes them happy and grounded thinking that they are contributing.

Handling a resistant senior with dementia

One major concern reported by the family members and caregivers is that the seniors with dementia have become resistant and do not like to participate in activities at all. The key is to resort to creative problem-solving. The best way forward would be to hire an in-home caregiver for seniors and make them do activities with their caregivers.

Besides this, it is also crucial for family members to understand that depression, anxiety, or agitation could also be preventing seniors with dementia from participating in the activities. Take them out and improve their mood first to make them enjoy the activities.
