Tips To Support Seniors Living with Alzheimer

Support Tips for Seniors Living with Alzheimer's

You must be familiar with the day-to-day challenges and heartbreak caused by this illness if you are caring for seniors living with Alzheimer’s. It is a disease that starts with memory loss but may lead to the inability to carry out simple conversations and everyday activities.

Most people feel that there’s nothing more that can be done to help as Alzheimer’s disease can cause seniors to withdraw from and forget about people.

One thing to bear in mind is that a senior is the same person you have known and loved for years and it is possible to help them lead the best life.

Here are some tips outlined below using which, you can support seniors living with Alzheimer’s in this blog.

Supporting Seniors With Alzheimer

Keep seniors engaged

Try to keep seniors with Alzheimer’s engaged and mentally stimulated with activities such as music, reading newspapers, puzzles, and carrying on conversations like usual.

Encourage physical activity

Keep seniors physically active but ensure it is according to their ability and comfort level. By doing so, seniors will also remain socially engaged. For instance, you can take seniors out for walks, bike rides, baking, and many more things.

Keep environment safe

For enhanced safety, consider implementing several key practices such as removing rugs, extension cords, and clutter to prevent falls; installing handrails or grab bars in essential areas; using locks on cabinets to secure potentially dangerous items like medicine, alcohol, guns, toxic cleaning supplies, sharp utensils, and tools; set the water heater to a lower temperature to avoid burns; store matches and lighters out of reach; and regularly check that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors have fresh batteries.

Be flexible

Seniors living with Alzheimer’s have diverse and different needs at the same time due to which, you must stay flexible with aerobic exercises. Try not to become frustrated by seeing their repeated behaviors or forgetfulness as this is a part of their illness.
