Why Seniors Should Have More Anti-Inflammatory Foods Over Others?

Benefits of Anti-Inflammatory Foods for Seniors

Anti-inflammatory foods for seniors such as chips, cookies, and soda are known for their low nutrition and high calories. Seniors eating too much of these can make them prone to health problems such as weight gain and type 2 diabetes.

Another health concern among seniors that should be on the top of your mind is inflammation. Inflammation tends to damage senior’s body cells. If ignored, it can lead to new and worsening health problems such as cancers, diabetes, depression, heart disease, and joint pain.

Consequently, it is always recommended for seniors to eat more anti-inflammatory foods than others. Here’s which anti-inflammatory foods are highly recommended for seniors.

Inflammatory Food Swaps For Seniors

Some foods may not cause immediate problems for seniors but can contribute to inflammatory processes over time. The best way forward to fix this would be to work with a senior doctor to figure out which foods will be best for them and which foods seniors need to avoid.

Here are some inflammatory food swaps for seniors mentioned below.

Bottled beverages

Bottled beverages such as tea, coffee, soda, and sports drinks contain high amounts of sugar and sodium. Most of these drinks have more than 2.5 tablespoons of sugar in them.

Instead of giving these canned beverages to seniors, consider giving them water. You can add fruit slices to water to twist it and make it tasty for seniors.

Bleached white flour

Do you often give bread and pasta to seniors? Bread and pasta have ingredients that strip away slow digesting nutrients and increase insulin levels which in turn causes inflammation.

Instead of this, give seniors whole grain and sprouted bread and pasta as this has more nutritional value and also causes less inflammation to seniors.

Fried foods

Fried foods such as French fries, fried chicken, and butter-like spreads contain too much oil or grease that carries unhealthy trans fat and chemicals that can harm seniors.

The best way forward would be to use an air fryer instead of deep frying it in oil to make it fit for seniors. You can use flavored olive oil instead of margarine to spice up bread and other dishes prepared for seniors.

Packaged sweets

Common sweet treats like donuts, cookies, candy, brownies, and snack cakes are high in sugar content, which can lead to inflammation and contribute to insulin resistance, affecting the body’s energy conversion process.

To satisfy a sweet tooth without these negative effects, consider healthier alternatives such as dark chocolate or antioxidant-rich fruits like oranges, strawberries, and blueberries. These alternatives not only provide a sweet fix but also support a healthy immune system thanks to their vitamin and antioxidant content.

Red and processed meats

The food like red meats, hot dogs, and bacon tend to contain preservatives and chemicals which in turn trigger inflammation among seniors. Some of these foods are high in calories and low in nutrition.

Try giving lean meats or fatty fish such as salmon or tuna to seniors. Incorporate more plant-based proteins in seniors’ diets such as beans, nuts, or seeds.
