5 Best Practices For Seniors Beginning With Yoga

Beginning Yoga practices for Seniors in Florida

Seniors often find yoga to be a daunting task especially if they are 65 or above. It might be because of mobility issues, health issues, or due to the fear of falling. No doubt that yoga can seem next to impossible to seniors in the beginning but it also brings immense benefits to seniors.

Seniors can find a sea change in themselves after doing yoga such as improved balance and coordination, better flexibility, improved breathing, reduced stress, and improved sleep quality.

Here are some tips for seniors which’ll help them get started with yoga even if they are doing it for the first time.

Beginner Yoga Tips For Seniors

Go at your own pace

Ask seniors to go at their own pace to gradually build strength and flexibility. Seniors should understand that yoga is one’s practice and not something about keeping up with people around you.

Make sure that seniors take a rest after every pose and do not rush into postures. Ask seniors not to add any new movements until the body gets adjusted to the routine.

Drink water

Seniors should drink plenty of water before, during, and after yoga to make themselves feel hydrated throughout the day. Drinking water while doing yoga at the beginning helps seniors regulate their body temperature, transport nutrients, and keep the body functioning at its highest level.

Water is an excuse to stop and catch your breath while you are practicing yoga. Moreover, water helps seniors recover by exercising.

Stop if you feel pain

Seniors practicing yoga should stop when feeling pain. Initially, as seniors begin to stretch their muscles, it’s normal for them to feel slight discomfort but if seniors continue to feel pain, then seniors stop doing that yoga pose.

Enjoy yoga

Seniors should not yoga merely to experience the benefits and just because they are supposed to. Instead, seniors should enjoy the yoga experience and journey as much as possible. It is a gentle method of exercise that seniors should enjoy.

Practice yoga at the beginning

Commitment is crucial in yoga, as it typically doesn’t yield quick or dramatic results. Regular practice, even if for shorter durations (15-30 minutes), is more effective than infrequent, longer sessions. Notably, even just one yoga session per week can provide noticeable benefits.
