What To Look For While Choosing Shoes For Seniors To Improve Their Mobility

boots

As seniors age, the chances of them having footwear issues increase and also the risk of falls. This in turn can result in seniors getting injuries. Consequently, the family members and caregivers need to ensure that the senior’s shoes should support their feet properly and allow their muscles to work less.

But choosing the right shoes for seniors out of plenty of options might be a daunting task. So, here are some tips outlined below using which, you can easily choose the right shoes for seniors.

Tips To Choose The Right Shoes For Seniors

Non-slip sole

The first thing that you need to ensure while choosing shoes for seniors is a non-slip sole. The non-slip sole is essential to ensure stability and prevent falls among seniors. Smooth soles shoes are a must for seniors suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

Adequate traction

When selecting shoes for seniors having balance problems, good grip is of critical importance. Consequently, look for groove patterns on the bottom of the shoe as these allow water to escape and keep the seniors steady in wet conditions.

A low heel

Shoes with heels higher than 1.5 inches can strain seniors’ toes and feet by shifting their weight. However, completely flat shoes can also be uncomfortable. It’s best to choose shoes with a wide, slightly elevated heel for optimal comfort and support.

Right material

The next crucial thing to consider while choosing shoes for seniors is the right material. The shoes with uppers made of sturdy materials offer more support and insulation. If the upper is softer, it will be more lightweight and more breathable. Consequently, keep this in mind when choosing shoes for seniors.

Adequate padding

Cushioning in shoes helps to absorb and spread out the shock from foot impact, minimizing its effects on the hips and back. For seniors prone to hitting their feet on objects, shoes with additional padding in the upper are beneficial.

Removable insoles

For those intending to use over-the-counter or custom orthotics, it’s important to choose shoes with removable insoles.
