How To Make Cooking Safe For Seniors?

Consequently, here are some tips stated below to make cooking safe for seniors.

Tips To Make Cooking Safe For Seniors

Do not leave food unattended

Not attending to the food cooking on the stove is one of the major reasons for kitchen fires. Do not leave the kitchen if the food is cooking, especially the ones with Alzheimer’s or dementia as such people tend to forget that food is cooking.

The best alternative for seniors with dementia or Alzheimer’s is to install auto shut-off devices to turn off the stove after cooking automatically. Doing so will provide you with the peace of mind that seniors are safe at home.

Right pots and pans

Having heavy pots and pans in the kitchen can turn out to be risky for seniors who have arthritis or Parkinson’s disease. These can invite accidents for seniors at home while you are not available.

Instead of heavy pots and pans, give two-handled pans to the seniors as these are easy to lift and also come with more stability.

Clear the clutter

Always clear the clutter off the surfaces and surrounding areas after cooking the food. Always use oven mitts and pot holders while cooking, but ensure they are kept at a safe distance from the stove when not in use. Numerous kitchen items can catch fire easily. Therefore, never leave items like oven mitts, dish towels, wooden utensils, paper products, plastic bags, cardboard boxes, cooking spray cans, or oils near open stove burners.

Install safety equipment

Ensure a functional smoke detector is installed in the kitchen. This device should be tested and cleaned monthly, and its batteries should be replaced annually. Additionally, keep a small fire extinguisher in the kitchen and instruct your loved one on its usage. If required, attach written instructions for operating the extinguisher to its body for easy reference.

Wear right clothing

Seniors when cooking should avoid loose clothing with flowing sleeves. Dresses such as robes or other comfortable garments are usually comfortable and can ignite if brought too close to the fire. Consequently, ask the seniors to wear other comfortable clothing with tight-fitting sleeves to be safe.

Seniors no longer have to give up on cooking because of mobility or mental issues. The key is to make cooking safe for them by providing the right environment for the same.
