What To Do If A Senior Is Suddenly Hospitalized?

The adult children of seniors always dread the call that seniors have been rushed to the hospital. The reasons leading to this crisis mode are falls, surgery, or the flu. At this time, countless questions are running through family members’ minds.

emergency

People think that keeping oneself prepared for this is the way to deal with this but hardly do they realize that heart attack, stroke, or infection can happen anytime and are uncertain. It can be difficult for you to process your emotions at this difficult time and make the right decisions.

Consequently, here’s a list telling you what you need to do after getting to know that a senior is hospitalized.

Things To Do If Senior Gets Hospitalized

Have open communication with hospital staff

It will be difficult for you to figure out what to do, whom to ask, and what to ask. The first thing to do at the time of emergency is to know your loved one’s doctor and take charge of it. Request an urgent meeting with the physician and write down questions that you need to ask. Doing so makes it easy for you to communicate with the staff and answer their questions. Also, keep in touch with the care team at the hospital to make sure that the senior is receiving proper care or not.

Enquire about medications or any equipment

The next thing to do is to ask about the medications the senior needs to take after discharge. Also ask if seniors need any therapy such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, or speech-language therapy. Enquire if you need to set up durable medical equipment at your home for seniors’ mobility or functioning and make them return to their normal routines. Also, be in constant touch with medical professionals to facilitate faster recovery of seniors.

Decide where seniors will stay

After being in the hospital, some seniors can go back to their own homes but others might need special care to get back to total functioning before getting back to their homes. Moreover, it is not safe for seniors to live alone after discharge from a hospital. The best way to ensure seniors’ safety would be to invest in senior living facilities or hire an In-home caregiver for seniors. Make sure that you know about all the available options so that you can decide accordingly.

Know about senior’s medical condition

Gaining substantial knowledge about your loved one’s medical condition during their hospital stay, amidst billing concerns and post-discharge plans, can prove challenging. While the hospital care team provides valuable insights for future decisions, It does not mean that your responsibilities are over. You need to understand their medical condition and prescribed medications, particularly if the senior has chronic or progressive ailments such as COPD, heart failure, or dementia.

Give emotional support to yourself

While taking care of the seniors in the hospital and after hospital discharge, do not forget about yourself. Make sure to give emotional support to yourself also. Figure out what resources are available. Make sure to do your best to take care of the seniors at home. Understand that if you’ll be healthy and happy, it will make seniors too happy.
