Anxiety Among Seniors: Understanding the signs of Depression

Health and life issues can foster many adverse changes in their minds and bodies as seniors age. Some seniors end up facing difficulties with their memory such as forgetting names or events.

Memory lapses among seniors are not normal and can turn out to be severe, especially the ones related to memory disorders such as Alzheimer’s or dementia. Good-natured seniors can express their irritation by lashing out verbally but other seniors end up getting depressed.

Consequently, you can ensure the right treatment and care for seniors by spotting early signs of anxiety and depression among seniors.

Symptoms of Anxiety or Depression Among Seniors

The research conducted on anxiety or depression among seniors reveals that more than 13% of seniors suffer from depression and 10-20% of seniors feel anxiety.

Some common symptoms of anxiety or depression among seniors include:

  • Neglecting social functions and self-isolating
  • Experiencing anxiety attacks such as sweating, nausea, or difficulty breathing
  • Feeling upset regarding changes in schedule
  • No pleasure in favorite activities
  • Disturbance in sleep
  • Irritability or restlessness
  • Wandering

Treatment Options For Treating Anxiety or Depression in Seniors

You and seniors need to have an open dialogue with their doctor when seeking treatment for anxiety or depression in the elderly at your home. Here are some approaches outlined below to improve the mental well-being and overall quality of life of seniors.

Medication

One of the best ways to treat anxiety or depression among the elderly is medication. Visit the senior healthcare physician along with the senior and discuss the medications you can give to seniors. Once you know the medications to give to seniors, make sure to hire caregivers to give medication reminders and ensure they are taking the right medications. Also, it will help to manage multiple medications.

Exercise

The elderly with anxiety or depression issues should exercise as this improves their mood and increases their energy levels. Some exercises seniors should consider include yoga, water aerobics, and armchair exercises.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy also works wonders for seniors dealing with anxiety or depression. The best way forward would be to explore past experiences contributing to current symptoms among seniors with a mental health professional.

Cognitive behavioral therapy

Make sure to speak to a mental health professional and discuss the symptoms seniors are experiencing. A consultation with a mental health professional will also help you build skills to manage them.

Social interaction

Social interaction always works best for seniors dealing with anxiety or depression. Ask seniors to join clubs or hobby groups as this will combat isolation among seniors.
