Tips To Prevent Seniors From Skin Cancer
Seniors spend most of their time outdoors in the summer. No doubt that the touch of the sun is considered as restorative for the skin but seniors need to be careful when in the sun. The UV damage caused by the sun can sometimes lead to skin cancer among seniors.
Enjoying some time outside in the sun is good but seniors need to take some steps to protect their skin. Due to the seniors’ weak immune system, seniors are more prone to skin cancer compared to others.
So, let’s have an insight into these tips to prevent seniors from skin cancer.
Protecting Seniors From Skin Cancer
The research reveals that skin cancer is largely caused by UV exposure. Preventing skin cancer is simple: Protect your skin from the sun.
Always apply sunscreen
Sunscreen is not only meant for youngsters but seniors as well. The seniors no longer need to stay indoors to prevent the risk of skin cancer. Seniors can go outside in the sun but only after applying sunscreen. Besides this, also ensure that seniors wear sunscreen often, not only once a day.
Avoid sun during peak hours
The next most important thing to bear in mind is to avoid the sun during the peak hours. The sun’s rays happen to be the strongest during the peak hours. Consequently, seniors should do walking or gardening early in the morning or late evening.
Wear sunglasses
Wearing sunglasses when out in the sun is a must for seniors. So ensure seniors wear UVA/UVB sunglasses to protect seniors eyes from both kinds of harmful rays.
Wear protective clothing
Ask seniors to wear hats and long sleeves. If seniors plan to sit in the sun, then ask seniors to wear pants too.
Look for suspicious growth
Perform a monthly head-to-toe skin cancer self-check, paying attention to irregular borders, varying colors, and increasing size of growths. Schedule an annual skin cancer check for early detection, as recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation.
