Things To Do When Seniors Start Getting Lost

smirkingg

Memory loss can obstruct daily activities for seniors in the early stages of dementia or cognitive impairment. However severe mental lapses can cause the seniors to get lost during a walk or when driving a car. Due to seniors getting lost, a simple outing can become an upsetting and dangerous situation.

If seniors struggle to navigate their surroundings, then the best way forward would be to talk to a medical professional.  The medical professional will perform tests and assessments to figure out the memory issue.

Tips To Help Seniors Get Lost

There are several ways to help seniors who get lost during outings. Let’s have a look at those.

Keep photos and videos

Ask the seniors to keep photos and videos with them whenever they go outside so that the police and others can find them easily.

ID tag

Getting an ID tag and making the seniors wear it whenever going out is also a great way to help seniors get lost. An ID tag should include the senior’s name, phone number, address, and diagnosis. You can also attach these labels inside their clothing if they resist or forget to wear an ID tag.

Using a GPS

For the seniors who are still driving, consider installing a GPS or device in their car whenever they are navigating around the town. Also activating the GPS on seniors’ mobile phones.

Know triggers

Check if the senior gets lost during certain times of the day or when visiting a confusing or unfamiliar place such as a grocery store. Keeping these triggers in mind will help you to plan for their safety.

Create routines

Older adults experiencing cognitive decline benefit from routines and familiar environments. Creating a daily routine can aid their memory and navigation. It’s also helpful for family and local authorities to know their regular places, making it easier to locate them if they get lost.
