The majority of seniors enjoy a healthy and self-sufficient lifestyle. However, inevitable changes that come with age
Is Aging In Place Always A Good Option For Seniors?
Most of the seniors want to age in their own homes because of the safety and comfort they get there as they age. But is it always safe and aging in place is a good option for seniors?
Single seniors, who are widowed and have no children lack a support system. They are all alone in the community as there is no one to take care of them. The research says that the number of senior orphans is going to increase in the coming years.
One should know that there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to aging. Many seniors receive support from outside due to which, they can easily age in place but then others fail to plan and need someone’s support to age. Consequently, senior orphans tend to see the aging-in-place concept differently.
Does Aging In Place Promote Senior Independence Or Leads To Isolation?
The majority of seniors like to age in place because of the familiar surroundings and the fear of the institutions. Many seniors also fight to remain in their homes and navigate safely. Around two million Americans never want to leave their homes.
No doubt that aging in place seems ideal at first but can also be dangerous for seniors who have no ties to the community. Aging in place also gives seniors control because they require a variety of services and support.
The senior’s ever-changing needs require a support team, money, and flexibility among team members to look after the seniors and make them age in place.
What Does Aging In Place Mean?
Sometimes, seniors become adamant and stubborn regarding aging in place but aging in place requires careful planning and thought. Aging in place is not about denial or inaction but developing a realistic plan.
Even with a realistic plan, it can become difficult for seniors to find in-home support and can also turn out to be a costly affair for seniors’ family members.
Many seniors find themselves in conditions that are not conducive to their health and safety, leading to isolation and a decline in their overall well-being without a comprehensive plan. Rather than cherishing their later years in the company of their peers and supportive measures that promote autonomy, they risk their health and settle for merely getting by.
The seniors can experience severe setbacks in health because of the refusal to accept help or change one’s daily routine which in turn will force the senior to move to senior living faculty. Sometimes, seniors are unable to decide if they should move on to the senior faculty or age in place.
One should always hope for the best and plan for the worse when it comes to aging in place. Otherwise, there is no guarantee that seniors have control over how and where they age without having a strategy in place.
