Tips To Cope With The Guilt When Seniors Move To Assisted Living

sidebysdeu

Feeling guilty is the most common emotion experienced by seniors’ families when it’s time to look for a senior housing community for seniors. Adult children often feel guilty because of not being able to find a way to care for the seniors at home.

Many families and children find themselves failing badly despite doing research and working together to find an assisted living community that meets the senior’s needs.

Use the tips outlined below to manage the guilt within yourself if seniors at your home are planning to move to assisted living.

Tips To Manage Guilt Upon Seniors Moving To Assisted Living

Trust your research

The most obvious reason for guilt among adult children is because they doubt whether they have chosen the right community for seniors or not. The key is to trust your research and make a decision. If by any chance seniors do not like the living community, you always have the option of looking for another assisted living community.

Talk to staff

Transitioning from being responsible for a senior loved one’s physical needs back to the role of the adult child presents new opportunities. After the move, consider volunteering in the community where your loved one resides. This can enhance seniors’ connection with their family members and provide a chance to build better relationships with the staff.

Reconnect with your friends

While caring for the seniors at your home the entire day, it is common for adult children to lose touch with their friends. But now as seniors are moving to the assisted living facility, you can call your friends and catch them up.

Engage in productive activities

The big chunk of the adult children’s day is filled with personal care tasks and running errands for the seniors. Now that you are filled with guilt of not being able to take proper care of seniors, the key is to do something productive to make the best use of your time. You can go out for a walk or practice yoga.

Focus on benefits

Assisted living residents receive various services and support, and many seniors express that they wish they had made the move sooner. Assisted living offers companionship, access to activities and outings, nutritious meals, and the assurance of caregivers being nearby when needed, all of which significantly enhance the residents’ quality of life.
