Does a Senior’s Personality Change With Age?

Senior Personality Changes With Age

Numerous psychologists and researchers are intrigued by the question of whether the senior’s personality changes with their age or not. Personality refers to a set of characteristics that define an individual.

Usually, personality stays stable throughout adulthood but it is normal to experience subtle shifts in one’s personality and seniors are no exception to this.

Consequently, let us learn some of the factors leading to shifts in senior personalities and their potential implications.

Changes in Senior Personality With Age

Most psychologists believe that personality stays the same throughout adulthood. If one is introverted at a young age, then one is likely to be introverted at a later age. But this in no way means that one’s personality is set in stone. Nearly everyone is bound to experience some drastic or mild changes in one’s personality under the given circumstances.

Consequently, here are some factors that can cause a shift in seniors’ personality.

Maturity

One of the biggest factors for personality changes among seniors is maturity. As seniors get older, they tend to become more mature than they were. From adulthood to old age, seniors gain new life experiences, wisdom, and emotional regulation skills.

All this can bring a shift in seniors’ personalities. Maturity can have the following impact on seniors’ personality:

Increase agreeableness- Most people consider seniors to be grumpy but the reality might be the complete opposite to it. As seniors mature and grow old, they become more empathetic and compassionate towards others.

Decrease neuroticism- Seniors’ emotional stability tends to increase as they age and this in turn reduces neuroticism traits.

Cognitive aging

Aging also leads to cognitive decline among seniors which in turn can have a huge impact on their personalities. This cognitive decline is not linked to dementia but the usual decline that takes place because of age.

The cognitive decline can bring some changes in seniors’ memory, problem-solving abilities, and cognitive functioning which can cause a change in their personality.

Personality disorders

Some senior personality changes can be dramatic and can be related to mental disorders or personality disorders. Usually, seniors do not experience such personality changes but if such personality disorders happen, seniors can experience more neuroticism.

Health issues and physical changes

The next factors bringing personality change among seniors are health issues and physical changes. Good mental and physical health can make seniors’ personality traits stable.

On the contrary, seniors experiencing chronic health issues, and surgeries can change their brains and be the cause of personality changes among them.

Seniors with dementia or Alzheimer’s tend to witness major personality changes as seniors tend to become aggressive and irritable as the disease progresses.

Environment

In addition to all these factors, another important factor that brings changes in a senior’s personality is life events and circumstances. Major life transitions in seniors’ lives such as marriage, career changes, and retirement can bring some changes in senior personality.

Besides this, some severe life events such as the death of a loved one can also bring unexpected changes in a senior’s personality.

Tips To Deal With Personality Changes Among Seniors

It can be hard to deal with some personality changes among seniors especially if it happens all of a sudden. Consequently, here are some tips to help you deal with unexpected changes in a senior’s personality.

Visit a healthcare provider

Do not hesitate to take seniors to a doctor if you are witnessing severe and sudden changes in their personality. The sudden changes can be due to some medications or health issues.

Try to accept

Instead of correcting seniors’ sudden behavior, try to accept the changes and adopt them. Otherwise, if you try to resist seniors, the chances are that they may become aggressive.
