Facts You Should Know About Senior Isolation

Senior Isolation: Understanding the Key Facts and Insights

Seniors might feel that their worlds are shrinking due to retirement, the death of family and friends, or lack of mobility. Due to this, seniors find it difficult to participate in social activities which leads to senior isolation. Seniors who are socially isolated or feel lonely often can find consequences to be life-threatening.

Consequently, research is being done to understand the causes, risks, and prevention of social isolation among seniors. So, here are five facts that will help you to identify seniors who are socially isolated and also the ways to address them.

Facts About Senior Isolation

Prone to elder abuse

The studies conducted on seniors have revealed that seniors having limited social networks are more vulnerable to financial fraud and scams. The key to addressing this is bolstering social support. Ask seniors to make connections with their friends and family. Also, ask seniors to speak about anything that they are uncomfortable with.

Isolated seniors need long-term care

The impact of loneliness on older adults can lead to increased physical and mental decline, resulting in a greater need for long-term care. A study revealed that Medicare spends an additional $6.7 billion annually on socially isolated older adults. For those lacking long-term care insurance, continuous health problems can significantly strain personal finances.

Impacts on physical and mental health

The research reveals that socially isolated seniors are more likely to develop long-term illnesses than others. Loneliness among seniors will also take them closer to cognitive decline and increase the risk of developing dementia or depression. The best way forward for such seniors would be to own a pet as it acts as a perfect companion and would also take seniors out for a walk.

Family caregivers are isolated too

It is not only the seniors who are socially isolated but also the ones who look after the seniors. Family caregivers often find themselves juggling between caregiving and other tasks. This can make caregivers feel lonely and depressed. No matter what, caregivers should take time for themselves, practice mindfulness, and seek support to give themselves a much-needed break.

Married couples are also at risk

Contrary to popular belief, older adults who are married or living with a partner are just as prone to feeling isolated as those who are single. This is often due to changes in social life, such as children being preoccupied with their families and friends moving away or passing on. When one partner experiences a cognitive or physical decline, it significantly affects the other as they assume a caregiving role.
