Tips For Seniors To Enjoy Halloween

Enjoying Halloween for Seniors

Halloween is not only meant for youngsters but for Americans of all ages. There are plenty of seniors who have fond memories of their children being treated in their neighborhood. But this holiday will not be the same for seniors but different.

On a holiday like Halloween, there are chances that seniors might feel lonely. The doorbell constantly going off or people wearing gruesome costumes can be frightening for the elderly, especially the ones suffering from dementia.

Consequently, here are some Halloween tips for seniors using which, you can ensure seniors enjoy Halloween and don’t feel scared.

Tips To Enjoy Halloween For Seniors

Attend a party

Being alone on holidays is something seniors are scared of and do not like. The best way to make seniors enjoy Halloween is to make them attend a party. Check if senior community centers are planning to have a Halloween-themed party.

Consider inviting the elderly to your house to play Halloween games if no Halloween-themed parties are going on. Being in the company of family and friends will lift the spirit of seniors and make them feel good in this goofy season.

Dress the right way

Seniors being older does not make them less fit for enjoyment. Ask seniors to dress up in Halloween costumes and have fun. Look for costume ideas that seniors can easily wear to a Halloween party.

Wearing Halloween costumes can make the elderly feel vivacious and youthful. The only thing to take care of is that costumes do not cause any problems for seniors.

Have an adult with seniors

Standing up open at the door and passing out candy can scare the seniors living independently. Health conditions like arthritis or chronic health conditions can make it daunting for seniors to rush to the door quickly.

The idea of opening the door to many strangers can scare the seniors living alone. Consequently, the best way forward would be by building a caregiver plan to have an adult with seniors pass out their favorite Halloween treats.

You can also position yourself and seniors before the kids knock on your door. Doing so will make seniors seated and watch everything from there.

Safe decorations

The next effective way for seniors to enjoy Halloween is to put up safe decorations. With plenty of Halloween decorations available these days, some of these decorations can pose safety hazards to seniors. Seniors suffering from cognitive decline or dementia can get confused or scared upon seeing spooky decorations.

The best way would be to keep the large Halloween decorations outside. Also, ensure that decorations do not act as tripping hazards for seniors.

Watch a movie

Watching a movie together is also a good idea to have a great time with the elderly on Halloween. The best movie for seniors to get in the spirit of Halloween without getting scared is none other than the A family-friendly flick.

While choosing a Halloween movie for seniors, make sure that the movie is not too scary.

Decorate a pumpkin

Consider decorating a pumpkin this Halloween season with the elderly. Do not ask the seniors to carve the pumpkin as this takes a lot of strength and dexterity which might not be possible for seniors. Ask seniors to decorate pumpkins using tape, paper, paint, and other materials.

The idea is to involve seniors in tasks that do not require much strength and sharp objects. Do the carving yourself and let seniors do the simple tasks.

Be careful while choosing candy

Halloween is incomplete without candy. However, care should be taken while choosing the candy as not every candy is safe for seniors. Usually, hard candies happen to be hazardous for seniors. Consequently, buy the candy that seniors can safely eat.
