Tips To Talk To The Physician About Senior Health

One major issue reported by the family members and caregivers is that seniors tend to hide plenty of things from the doctors and are not honest with their physicians. When at home, the seniors tend to complain about pain and struggle to do daily activities independently but they do not speak about the issues at the physician’s clinic.

Suddenly, the seniors have no complaints to their physicians and become charming as if they were never ill. Consequently, the key is that you should speak to the physician and tell them about the senior’s health.

Tips To Talk To Physicians

Family members can ensure that the physicians know everything about the senior’s health and stay well informed if the seniors refuse to tell anything to the doctors. Here are some tips and tricks to keep in mind when speaking to a senior’s physician.

Speak to seniors

The first thing you need to do is to speak to the seniors ahead of time and doctors only tend to respect an educated patient. Back in time, there was no patient and physician interaction due to which, the seniors might not be able to talk to physicians properly. So you need to remind them of their power so that they end up being honest at the physician’s clinic.

Get proper authorizations

To have a detailed discussion with doctors about a loved one’s medical condition, you need to schedule an appointment and ensure you have the necessary HIPAA authorization and a valid medical power of attorney (POA). Ensure all doctors involved in your parent’s care have copies of these essential legal documents.

Involve seniors

Usually, the medical professionals or physicians stay busy but still, you must involve the seniors in the conversation and make sure that the doctor speaks to the seniors. You only have to be with seniors to support them, take notes, and improve their care plan to make them recover faster. Remember that it is the senior’s right to participate in their care as much as possible.

Medications list

When speaking to the physician on behalf of the senior, make sure to make a complete list of every prescription, over-the-counter medication, or vitamin the senior takes. Doing so will help the doctor to spot drug interactions, look into the side effects and prevent over medications.

Keep note of observations

Attach notes detailing new or worsening behaviors or health issues from the past weeks to your letter. This allows you to share specifics with the doctor without directly contradicting or embarrassing your loved one during the visit.

Send documents to the physician

You can also talk to the doctor about the senior’s overall health by sending him letters or documents including all your concerns. Seeing this, the doctor also easily prepares and comes to know about seniors’ health and can tactfully mention these issues.

Be an advocate

Keep on reminding seniors that you are always on their side and their health is your top priority. Make them trust you. You might face some difficulties but you can try at least.
