Warning Signs Of Suicide Among Seniors

huuuggg

The warning signs can be easily missed when it comes to the potential of suicide among seniors. It is because as seniors age, they tend to have fewer social interactions compared to younger people and may be determined to take their own lives.

Consequently, seniors can work harder on concealing their intentions so that no one can ruin their plans. The seniors who live independently are more drawn towards suicidal thoughts than others.

Still, it is possible to come to know about the risk of suicide among seniors. Here are some warning signs to take note of to figure out the risk of suicide among seniors.

Warning Signs

Changes in health or independence

Losing interest in something that seniors once enjoyed doing so much can cause grieving and diminish the quality of life. Seniors suffering from chronic illness can experience trouble from unwanted changes in their life or living arrangements.

Family-related issues

Losing one’s spouse or other close family member can also cause intense sorrow or loneliness among seniors which in turn can lead them to commit suicide. Besides this, sometimes conflicts among family members can also lead to feelings of isolation or escape.

Loss of interest

The next warning sign to take note of is loss of interest. It is a serious issue among seniors and might persuade them to commit suicide.

Unusual behavior

Older adults experiencing suicidal thoughts may engage in unusual risk-taking behaviors or display patterns inconsistent with their regular personalities. Signs may include hoarding medications, abusing drugs or alcohol, giving away treasured possessions, reckless driving, showing a sudden interest in dark subjects, or acting excessively agitated or high-strung. These behaviors are often noticed by friends and loved ones as out of the ordinary for the individual.

Changed routine

Changes in the usual routine of seniors or seniors quitting routine tasks is another indicator of them thinking about committing suicide. This includes not paying heed to their personal hygiene, neglecting their appearance, or adopting poor eating habits.

Conveying suicidal thoughts

When seniors make statements like “Maybe you won’t see me after this”, “I wish I wasn’t alive”, or “You’ll be happier when I’m gone”, it can be a clear indication of serious suicidal thoughts. While not all such statements necessarily signal suicidal intent, they are significant red flags requiring immediate attention from mental health professionals.
