Things To Do If Seniors Don’t Stop Driving

There comes a time when family members fear that seniors are no longer safe behind the wheel. Also, family members hesitate to act on this but ignoring the warning signs can turn out to be dangerous and have severe consequences.

Health Conditions Affecting Senior’s Ability To Drive

drivingcigg

It is not only the age factor that affects the senior’s ability to drive. Numerous health conditions can prevent seniors from driving such as memory, decision-making processes, inability to see and hear, reaction times, or other things that adversely affect the senior’s driving skills.

Discussing concerns about an elder’s driving can be challenging, especially if they resist acknowledging the issue. Anosognosia, a lack of awareness about their condition, might be a factor, especially in cases of dementia.

What To Do If A Senior Refuses To Stop Driving?

It is crucial to have some backup if seniors refuse to stop driving and say they are still safe behind the wheel. This is an issue on which most seniors do not agree with their family members so the best way to solve this issue is to ask someone else to speak to them.

Consequently, here are some things for you to do if you are dealing with a senior who is not willing to give up on driving.

Ask their physician to speak

The best thing you can do to convince a senior is to ask their physician to speak to them regarding this. Ask their physician to address the driving and safety issues with the seniors at the next appointment. If required, ask the physician to give you a written report so that you can show it to the motor vehicles department. Doing so will also convince the seniors that it is not safe for them to drive.

Approach the motor vehicles department

If the seniors are too stubborn and difficult to deal with, then the best way forward would be to approach the Department of motor vehicles directly. In the meanwhile, you can also report an unsafe driver to the department so that it can further investigate their record and driving abilities. The department will then conduct a test, a visual test, and also a driving test.

Licensing standards and procedures for drivers vary by state, lacking national consistency. Each state has its own guidelines, and some states may keep the identity of those requesting evaluations confidential, while others might disclose this information if asked by the driver.

Consult an optometrist

Having decent eyesight for driving is crucial. If you feel that a senior’s vision is not right and should give up on driving, then schedule an appointment with an eye specialist to provide them with solid evidence as to why driving is unsafe for them. Ensure to get a report from the physician to show to seniors.

Take keys away

Lastly, just take the keys from the seniors as this is the only way to prevent them from driving. Initially, it may cause conflict between you and them but it is necessary for maintaining the senior’s safety.
