Tips To Modify The Home For Seniors Having Low Vision

looking focin

Seniors having eye diseases or vision loss do not mean that they should stay confined within the home or safe facilities only. Even seniors with low vision can live independently within their own communities if you make simple adaptations to their personal home environments.

This not only makes them enjoy freedom but also tends to improve their quality of life. One obvious risk surrounding seniors with low vision is falls. A fall can lead to many health problems in seniors and make it difficult for them to recover easily.

Consequently, it is essential to lower the risk of falls among low-vision seniors by making some modifications at home.

Home Modifications For Low-Vision Seniors

  • Make use of bright and contrasting colors so that seniors can easily recognize the different objects.
  • Install lamps in reading and other activity areas of the house.
  • Install grab bars and railings in risk areas such as the bathroom, and stairs.
  • The walkways should be made visible to seniors by using bright tape at the edges of doorways, ramps, or stairs.
  • The trip hazards should be removed due to which seniors can fall.
  • Make use of non-skid flooring to reduce the shine.
  • The old, worn, or damaged carpets should be replaced as these can trip a senior.

All the home modifications discussed above are quite simple and inexpensive. The seniors or their family members can also consult others to learn some other ways to reduce the risk and prevent the low vision seniors from falling.

Also, you can decrease much of the anxiety of the low-vision seniors by offering them much-needed support and helping them function at normal levels in their homes. The best way forward would be to hire a professional caregiver to help low-vision seniors manage their daily lives.
