Steps To Clean Eyeglasses For Seniors

Towfiqu Barbhuiya 2

Taking proper care of your eyes is essential to preserve their function in the later years. However, seniors suffering from vision loss or myopia end up wearing eyeglasses. Wearing eyeglasses is not the only thing. Seniors also need to clean their eyeglasses often to ensure they serve their purpose.

Wearing dirty eyeglasses with dirt or debris stuck into your lenses can make seniors prone to health issues such as eye strain or headaches. This can also affect seniors’ eyesight in the long run.

Consequently, let us discuss some of the best ways to clean eyeglasses to make life safe for seniors with low vision in the article outlined below.

Steps To Clean Eyeglasses

Wash hands first

The first thing to ensure before cleaning your eyeglasses is washing and drying your hands. Otherwise, you can end up smearing the frames of your eyeglasses with oil or dirt from your skin. So, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and then dry them using a lint-free towel.

Rinse off glasses

Once your hands are properly cleaned, the next step is to rinse off the glasses both frame and lenses, under running water. Make sure to use lukewarm water to wipe off the dust and dirt from the eyeglasses without damaging their special coating.

A drop of dishwashing liquid

The next step to properly clean the glasses is placing a drop of dishwashing liquid on each lens. While doing so, give special attention to the parts of eyeglasses that touch your skin such as temples, nose pads, and temple tips.

It’s important to avoid using certain dishwashing liquids to clean eyeglasses, especially if the glasses have anti-glare and anti-dust coatings. Using strong dishwashing liquids can remove these coatings. It makes the glasses more susceptible to dust and dirt buildup and losing their glare protection properties.

Besides this, you can also consider using an eyeglass cleaning solution but ensure that the product is approved to be used on lens coating.

Rinse off the cleaning solution

Hold the eyeglasses under the running water to wash off the soap on the lenses and frame for the second time. Ensure all soap or dishwashing liquid has been removed from your glasses.

Dry eyeglasses

The final step in cleaning eyeglasses is to gently dab them dry with a clean microfiber towel to avoid leaving lint. After drying, inspect the glasses for any remaining grit or smudges.
