How Can Physical Therapy Reduce The Risk Of Falls Among Seniors?

lookinateach12

The bladder problems among seniors can increase the risk of falling and have a severe effect on the quality of life of seniors. Fortunately, physical therapists can help you identify bladder issues in seniors and improve these without any medications or surgery.

Moreover, physical therapy can reduce the risk of falls among seniors to a significant extent. Let us learn the same in the article outlined below.

Why Do Bladder Problems Contribute To Falls Among Seniors?

Unlike popular opinion, falling is not a natural part of aging. Certain factors can heighten the risk of falls, such as frequent and urgent urination. The urgency to empty the bladder can cause individuals to hurry to the restroom or stay near one due to the fear of incontinence. This behavior not only limits activities but also increases the chance of falling. However, there are non-surgical and non-medication solutions to manage this issue.

Tips To Reduce Falls With Physical Therapy

Before treating falls among seniors, the physical therapist will ask you a series of questions about seniors’ bladder problems, and check out seniors’ capacity to hold urine and seniors’ urinary habits to figure out how to address seniors’ bladder issues.

Once the physical therapist has all this information, the next step will be to develop a treatment plan for seniors. The treatment plans might include retaining urinary habits, bladder, and pelvic muscles.

Besides this, the therapist might ask the seniors to avoid particular foods or drinks that irritate the bladder such as coffee, caffeine, tea, alcohol, spicy foods, or soda.

Not drinking enough water throughout the day can also irritate the bladder and cause frequent urges to empty the bladder. Consequently, it is significant for seniors to see a physical therapist and make out the issues that are making seniors fall.
