How To Improve The Indoor Environment For Seniors?

infrontlapoot

As seniors age, they tend to spend most of their time indoors. When seniors spend most of their time indoors, it becomes crucial to enhance their indoor living environment. The indoor environment should be clean, comfortable, and free from dust, odors, and other health hazards.

Moreover, as seniors age, they tend to experience a change in their senses and may not notice odors. Sometimes, mobility and cognitive issues prevent seniors from identifying household problems.

Tips To Improve Your Home For Seniors

A professional caregiver not only acts as a companion but also helps seniors uphold sanitary conditions inside their homes. Here are crucial things you need to take into account while improving the indoor environment.

Manage indoor allergens

The first thing to do is to manage indoor allergens. A professional caregiver can easily prevent indoor allergens such as mold, insects, dust mites, and others. The caregivers can clean the hard-to-reach spaces and remove dust to prevent allergy.

Allow fresh air

Always allow some fresh air inside the house. Make sure to open windows once in a day to let the fresh air in but also check the air quality and allergen alerts especially if the senior has asthma or any allergy.

Remove foul odors

The caregivers also assist with light housekeeping duties to keep the home free from odors. For instance, a caregiver can help the seniors to replace a dirty bed, spray fabric refresher, or clean spoiled food in the refrigerator as these are the major sources of foul odor in the house.

Working HVAC system

If a home has issues with mustiness, stuffiness, or irregular temperatures, the HVAC system may be at fault. Checking the thermostat can help determine if there’s a problem with the settings or system functionality. Caregivers can keep an eye out for such issues and inform you when it’s time to call an HVAC expert. It’s also beneficial to arrange for an HVAC company to conduct an annual service to maintain the system’s proper operation for your loved one.
