Can Seniors’ Lifestyle Choices Make Them Prone To Alzheimer’s?

youngold

The study conducted on Alzheimer’s disease reveals that nearly 5.8 Million people are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. This number will increase to around 14 Million in the coming years. The study also reveals that lifestyle plays a crucial role in the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

Fortunately, seniors diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease can slow down the progression of the disease by making certain lifestyle choices.

Let us learn about some lifestyle choices that can help seniors slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s.

Tips To Slow Down Alzheimer’s Disease

Relax and sleep well

The primary tip to prevent seniors from developing Alzheimer’s is to ask them to relax and have a good night’s sleep. Look for ways to manage stress among seniors such as yoga, swimming, meditation, walking, and others. Doing so can result in improved sleep and better brain health among seniors.

Stay connected

Another way to protect the cognitive health of seniors is to ask them to stay connected. Staying connected with others will keep the seniors engaged and avoid isolation. Ask seniors to spend time with friends. Seniors can also volunteer for non-profit organizations.

Learn something

Even if the seniors have retired, they must keep learning and growing for better brain health. Some of the activities seniors can engage themselves with include games, puzzles, reading, and writing. The other options seniors can consider include learning a new language, joining a book club, debating current events, or learning a new instrument.

Have healthy diet

Seniors’ diet plays a crucial role in determining whether they develop Alzheimer’s disease or not. One of the best diets for the cognitive health of seniors is the Mediterranean diet. This diet includes fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, lean protein and others. You can also give a combination of Mediterranean and DASH diets to seniors to prevent them from developing Alzheimer’s.

Keep moving

No doubt that exercising for about 30 minutes a day is essential but sitting too long can also turn out to be dangerous. A sedentary lifestyle can make seniors prone to health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, and Alzheimer’s. So make sure that seniors do not keep on sitting the entire day and exercise or walk.
