Why Do Seniors Sleep Throughout The Day?

With age, the sleep patterns of people also keep on changing compared to the time when they were younger. Most of the time, seniors tend to remain awake at night due to achy joints. So, seniors tend to compensate for this by having a nap during the day and it is normal.

Unfortunately, sleeping during the daytime can become a problem for seniors when they become habitual of spending most of their time in bed. You need to discover the reasons behind seniors sleeping during the day if you want them to stay awake during the day. You also might need to take help from the doctor in severe cases.

Reasons Why Seniors Sleep So Much

Medications

All medications carry potential side effects, and these can be amplified when multiple drugs are taken together. This is especially true for older individuals, as their bodies metabolize medications differently, making them more prone to adverse effects such as drowsiness and dizziness.

Medications for conditions like anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, insomnia, chronic pain, Parkinson’s disease, nausea, and allergies can all contribute to excessive sleepiness. If your loved one is taking any of these medications, it’s important to discuss the side effects and possible alternative treatments with their doctor.

Boredom and poor engagement

Seniors can experience chronic health conditions and physical changes that limit an individual’s ability to engage in enjoyable activities. This reduction in options for entertainment and outings can significantly impact an elder’s quality of life.

Without work or hobbies like reading or puzzles, and with television losing its appeal over time, elders may not necessarily be clinically depressed or overly tired, but rather, they may be experiencing profound boredom. With no set schedule and little to anticipate, they may fall into a routine of frequent napping throughout the day.

Dementia

The sleeping patterns of the senior can also be adversely affected by advancing dementia. Seniors suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s find it difficult to sleep at night due to which they prefer sleeping throughout the day.

Not sleeping properly can aggravate the symptoms such as agitation, sundowning, and frustration. Consequently, this can also be the major reason why seniors might be sleeping throughout the day.

Depression

Depression among seniors can also be the reason behind seniors sleeping too much. Nearly everyone knows the common signs of depression but these symptoms can differ greatly as far as seniors are concerned.

Take note of the sleeping schedule of seniors as these may indicate changes in seniors’ health. Make sure to talk to them about these issues and if the need arises, book an appointment with their physician.

Changes in health

Excessive sleep in individuals with serious medical conditions could signal a decline in their health. While it doesn’t necessarily indicate imminent death, it does warrant contacting their doctor to reassess their treatment plan.

If a loved one is sleeping excessively, it’s crucial to ensure they continue to receive necessary nutrition, personal care, and medication to prevent complications like dehydration, malnutrition, and pressure ulcers. In severe cases, a doctor may recommend an evaluation for a higher level of care, such as skilled nursing or hospice.

Why Should Seniors Stay Active?

Ensuring social engagement, mental stimulation, and physical activity is crucial for maintaining a high quality of life for seniors. However, balancing these needs with caregiving responsibilities and personal obligations can be challenging for family caregivers. A common solution is to arrange respite care that also provides stimulating activities for the senior.
