Tips To Help Seniors Declutter Their Homes

Declutter Seniors Homes: Essential Guidance

Physical and cognitive changes can make daily house cleaning difficult for seniors. Also, getting rid of clutter may seem an exciting idea to you but might not feel the same to seniors.

Despite having plenty of time, seniors might not be able to keep their homes clean and declutter. But no matter what, decluttering the homes is crucial as otherwise, seniors run the risk of falling.

Consequently, here are some tips to declutter seniors’ home and help them keep their homes clean and organized.

Tips To Declutter Senior’s Homes

Go around the house and take note of the inventory

The first thing is to go around the house and take note of the inventory and all the cluttered areas. Along with the seniors, check which things seniors require and which do not to enhance the indoor environment home. Also, seek seniors’ approval before throwing away things.

Get rid of hazards

Items that can make seniors fall such as stacks of newspapers, books, or other things need to be addressed. It is highly recommended that you should place cord organizers under all electronics. Besides this, have slip-resistant pads underneath all rugs to prevent seniors from falling.

Dispose of expired food

Always check the dates on the items in the senior’s fridge to check if the items are fresh or have expired. This becomes all the more crucial if seniors are in the habit of shopping in bulk. Also, make sure to check the items along with the seniors so that they know what things need to get rid of. This will prevent seniors from getting sick.

Donate items

Throwing out things can make seniors feel bad. So instead of throwing the items away, it is better to donate the unused items to the needy ones. This will make seniors comfortable in parting away with the things. Also, explain to them how these items will be useful to the ones in need of it.

Prioritize everyday items

Another great way to declutter seniors’ home and keep seniors homes organized is to prioritize everyday items. Make sure to remove everything that is of no use to seniors and keep it easy for seniors to maintain. For instance, only keep the clothes that seniors wear and remove the others that are no longer in use.
