Tips For Assisting Seniors In Adjusting to A New Caregiver

Hiring a caregiver or in-home care for seniors at home means establishing a relationship with a company and their professional caregiver. A caregiver is the one that comes to your home to assist in daily routine tasks such as housekeeping, bathing, and dressing for the seniors. The caregiver can only succeed in doing these tasks when seniors are comfortable with the caregiver.

Keeping in mind the few measures, you can ensure a smooth and positive experience for seniors at home.

Hiring A Caregiver

When hiring in-home care for taking care of seniors, make sure to screen the companies well and ask them questions. Doing so will ensure that you are hiring a professional caregiver and you can also be at peace knowing that the seniors will be comfortable with them.

Tips To Be Comfortable With A Caregiver

A competent professional caregiver initiates conversations and activities with seniors and starts building rapport with them real quickly. The most important benefit of hiring in-home care is companionship but both seniors and caregivers need to learn a great deal about each other for a great relationship. Hiring a new caregiver can sound uncomfortable for a moment but eventually, the seniors will get used to it.

The family members can play a constructive role in encouraging a great bond between both and starting a conversation between them in the first few visits.

Exchanging stories

Sharing memories and past experiences with family and friends can help build a bond between seniors and caregivers. It can create a sense of comfort and openness in seniors. Initially, seniors may find speaking up difficult but going through previous memories and experiences and sharing these with the caregiver can make room for meaningful discussions.

Listening to music

Listening to a treasured song together can also lay the foundation of a great bond between caregivers and seniors. It not only reduces anxiety among seniors but also brings back old memories.

Discussing hobbies and activities

The caregivers and seniors can also discuss their hobbies and interest areas to forge a connection between them. The activities such as arranging flowers, cooking, watching shows on TV, or doing minor household chores open up the seniors with the caregivers. This will not only keep the seniors engaged but will spark conversations between both and keep the minds active.

Opening up to more caregivers

Once seniors bond with one caregiver, they prefer to have the same caregiver visiting their home daily. However, this might not be possible every time that the same caregiver arrives. It’s best to introduce seniors to other caregivers and also to serve as substitutes if the primary caregiver is not able to make up that day due to any reason.

Using the ways mentioned above, seniors can easily form a great bond with their caregivers. Due to the bond formed, the seniors can experience greater enjoyment while being at their own homes. Once there is no more awkwardness among seniors, they look forward to caregiver visits.
