Signs Of Vitamin D Deficiency Among Seniors

phonecall

An increasingly common condition among seniors as they age is vitamin D Deficiency. The signs of vitamin D deficiency among seniors are not that clear due to which many family members and caregivers mistake it with other health conditions.

Consequently, it is more than essential to learn about vitamin D, its symptoms, and ways to address it to ensure that seniors are getting the desired nutrients.

Signs Of Vitamin D Deficiency Among Seniors

Weak muscles

Weak muscles among seniors are a clear indicator of vitamin D Deficiency. Due to vitamin D Deficiency, seniors tend to feel heaviness in their legs and face difficulty while standing. Vitamin D also keeps the senior’s bones, muscles, and teeth in excellent condition.

Digestive issues

Another indicator of vitamin D Deficiency among seniors is seniors experiencing digestive issues. Vitamin D Deficiency can contribute to Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) which is a chronic inflammation in the digestive tract.

Fatigue

Seniors frequently feeling fatigued might have a nutritional deficiency, often unrecognized. Low vitamin D can cause pain in areas like the shoulders and lower back, leading to constant tiredness. Those with stiff joints and persistent fatigue should consider increasing their vitamin D intake.

Weight gain

Vitamin D plays a crucial role in regulating seniors’ appetite and body weight. Lower levels of vitamin D among seniors can lead to obesity. Consequently, when a senior is deficient in vitamin D, their body does not know when to stop eating. This in turn can make seniors overweight.

Changes in mood

Vitamin D, which converts to the hormone calcitriol, is unique among vitamins and is linked to immune function and mood-regulating neurotransmitters. Low levels can be related to mental health issues such as seasonal affective disorder, schizophrenia, and depression. Seniors feeling constantly tired and depressed might have a vitamin D deficiency. Additionally, low vitamin D can contribute to cognitive decline and increase the risk of Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
