The deficiency of Vitamin D has become quite common among seniors. Moreover, the signs of vitamin D Deficiency are also subtle which makes it difficult for family members or caregivers to recognize the deficiency among seniors.

Vitamin D Deficiency is also confused with other health conditions in seniors. Consequently, the key is to learn about vitamin D Deficiency, its symptoms, and ways to address it in seniors.

Signs Of Vitamin D Deficiency Among Seniors

There are some notable signs or symptoms of vitamin D deficiency using which, you can easily find out if the seniors or your aging parents have vitamin D deficiency or not. Let’s take note of those signs:

Changes in mood

Vitamin D, which converts into the hormone calcitriol, plays a unique role in the body compared to other vitamins. It is linked to regulating immune function and the release of mood-influencing neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin.

Low levels of vitamin D have been associated with mental health issues such as seasonal affective disorder, schizophrenia, and depression. Moreover, a deficiency in seniors can lead to feelings of constant fatigue and depression and may increase the risk of cognitive decline, including Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

Fatigue

The seniors complaining of being tired throughout the day might be unaware of the vitamin D deficiency in their bodies. If a senior has vitamin D Deficiency, they’ll often complain of pain in areas like shoulders, pelvis, and lower back which in turn can leave the senior feeling drained. The key is to boost vitamin D intake to get rid of stiff joints.

Weight gain

Whether you know it or not, vitamin D is also helpful in regulating appetite and body weight. If the senior has a vitamin D Deficiency, then it will result in obesity and weight gain among seniors. The body will not come to know if it is hungry or not which might make it difficult for seniors to stop eating. Consequently, due to this, seniors can gain weight or become obese.

Weak muscles

Weak muscles are another sign of vitamin D deficiency among seniors. Due to vitamin D deficiency, seniors tend to feel heaviness in their legs and face difficulty in standing and climbing stairs.

The more weak the muscles, the more is the risk of falls and fractures among seniors which in turn can turn out to be dangerous for the seniors.

Digestive issues

Vitamin D deficiency among seniors can also contribute to the development of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. These can also make things worse for seniors as bowel diseases tend to interfere with the intestines’ dietary fat. The Nutritional deficiencies among seniors will become severe.

It is high time that family members, caregivers, and seniors understand the importance of vitamin D and how crucial it is for your body to function properly. If you notice any of the above-mentioned symptoms in seniors, make sure to consult a senior’s doctor. The seniors will feel better by getting a simple blood test done and taking an over-the-counter vitamin D supplement.
