How To Figure Out If Seniors Are Eating Right Or Not?

Providing adequate nutrition to seniors is a concern for many out there. The process of shopping for groceries, preparing a meal, eating alone, and cleaning up the kitchen can seem overwhelming due to the seniors being older. Moreover, as seniors age, it is obvious that appetite decreases and mealtimes can sound like a burden instead of pleasure.

Consequently, it becomes difficult for the family members to figure out if the senior is eating right or not. The distant family members who can only make a few visits to the home have a harder time ensuring whether the seniors are consuming a healthy diet or not.

Malnutrition in seniors is a serious concern for family members and can lead to additional health problems due to which recognizing the signs is crucial.

Signs Indicating A Senior Is Not Eating Right

It is not obvious if a senior is eating a healthy diet or not. Whenever asked by the seniors, they always say that they are eating well but in reality, they are not. Consequently, the best way to find out about the same is to look for the signs and figure out if the seniors are lacking in their diet or not.

Changes in body weight

Most of the time family members associate poor nutrition with weight loss. Hardly do people realize that even an overweight senior can be malnourished. No doubt that seniors tend to witness numerous fluctuations in their body weight over time but rapid weight loss among seniors is a cause of concern.

Likewise, weight gain among seniors can also be a concern. Consequently, keep noting the changes occurring in seniors’ body weight.

New health issues

Developing new health conditions in older age such as diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis or others can also indicate the poor diet of seniors. The reason behind the health issues might be the deficiency of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals affecting seniors’ immune system functioning and quality of life.

Consequently, look for symptoms such as low energy levels, increased falls, digestive issues, and slow wound healing. The majority of these symptoms are due to inadequate nutrition among seniors only.

Poor food choices

Poor food choices can also contribute to poor health and nutrition among seniors. Monitor their eating habits to find out about the foods they are eating. Empty shelves can be a sign that a senior is facing difficulty in mobility.

If you come across rotten or expired items, then it means that a senior has forgotten to eat their meal or is ignoring the meal. Also, check the quality of the foods they are taking. For instance, having too much-processed food can be a concern for them.

How To Deal With Appetite Loss In Seniors?

If the seniors are not eating well, then you must take desired steps and ensure that they take a proper diet. Try explaining to them the importance of a healthy diet. Besides this, here are some other ways to deal with this.

Schedule an assessment

A comprehensive geriatric assessment is the ideal starting point to understand the cause of appetite loss, weight changes, and nutrient deficiencies in seniors. This evaluation covers various aspects such as functional abilities, physical health, cognitive function, lifestyle, nutrition, and medication regimen, all of which significantly impact the quality of life.

The assessment should uncover most underlying reasons for these issues, and depending on the results, further tests and evaluations may be required.

Meet the specialist

Following a comprehensive medical assessment, a senior’s doctor might suggest consulting a specialist, such as a dietitian, to enhance their nutrition. A dietitian can devise a personalized diet plan catering to the unique nutritional needs of an older adult. Many Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) provide a variety of nutrition services, including nutrition screening, education, and counseling.

Also meet other specialists such as neurologists or dentists to assist seniors with dental issues, difficulty in swallowing, and cognitive issues. All these conditions can influence a senior’s diet and prevent them from eating right.
