Decorating the senior’s home, apartment or room can help both family members and seniors get into that holiday spirit. But there are some things you need to bear in mind before decorating the senior’s room or home.
Let’s take note of some tips to decorate seniors’ homes and make them feel good and get into that holiday spirit.
Tips To Decorate Senior’s Home
Don’t keep open flames
Decorating the home during the holiday season tends to involve a lot of fire in one way or the other. In addition to this, many use candles if it is a religious celebration such as Hanukkah or Kwanzaa. These are done to keep the house warm for seniors in winter but having open flames can be dangerous for seniors especially if they have dementia or Alzheimer’s.
Consequently, it’s best to use battery-operated candles. You can also look for alternative heating systems if the seniors live in a colder climate to provide them the warmth such as portable space heaters.
Invest in stockings and ornaments
The next best idea to decorate a senior’s home or room is to invest in hanging stockings or ornaments to be handled with care. Get shatterproof ornaments for seniors to make homes safe for them. Also, make sure that decorations should be within the reach of the senior or the ornaments should be placed at height so that the senior does not think about getting up and climbing up the ladder.
Get a fake christmas tree
Another best option to decorate a senior’s home is to get a fake Christmas tree for them. The Christmas tree comes in a variety of sizes and does not catch fire and most importantly, does not require much maintenance also.
If you want to give an authentic smell to the fake Christmas tree, then you can buy some pine-scented ornaments and place these on the Christmas tree. But make sure that all electrical cords are secured away from the walking path so that it does not make a senior fall.
Inspect all wires
When decorating the senior’s home, it is obvious that you’ll be dealing with lots of electrical lights during the holidays. Make sure to inspect all wires and plugs as nothing should be damaged. Check if the lights are fit to be used indoors or not. Doing light decorations can be convenient for you, especially for seniors with dementia or Alzheimer.
