Warning Signs Of Stroke Among Seniors In Broward County

Stroke among seniorsStroke among seniors tends to affect the arteries leading to and within the brain. When a person gets a stroke, it means that part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen supply and starts to die. The stroke can result in memory loss, vision loss, paralysis, and language problems. Besides this, you can also witness some behavioral changes such as changes in walking, dressing, grooming, and others.

Stroke mostly tends to affect the seniors in Broward County. No doubt that risk factors such as increased age and family history cannot be changed but the chances of getting a stroke can be lowered by urging seniors to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

The factors that can be controlled include smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, excessive alcohol intake, illegal drug use, and high cholesterol.

Stroke Among Seniors In Broward County

Seniors diagnosed with stroke should be admitted early to an intensive rehabilitation program as this reduces the mortality rate and improves functional outcomes. This is crucial in the first few months because of the greater chances of recovery.

Once there has been an assessment of the seniors’ needs, then the appropriate facility should be decided by the families. This includes medical stability, services provided, functional status, ability to learn, and a realistic discharge plan. The seniors who survived stroke should be allowed to benefit from a program that provides at least three hours of at least two rehabilitation disciples.

Symptoms Of Stroke Among Seniors In Broward County

Not knowing the symptoms of stroke can lead to delay and worsen the senior’s condition. So, let’s take a look at the symptoms of stroke and questions you need to ask.

Headache- If the elderly in Broward County are complaining of the worst kind of headache, then it is for sure a stroke.

Slurred speech- If the elderly are not able to speak properly or they are facing problems in getting their words out or it sounds like they have something in their mouth, it means that the elderly in Broward County suffered a stroke.

Weak body- Check if they can simultaneously lift both arms. Observe any inability to move one side of the body and assess their sensitivity to touch on their arm.

Vision problems- Another notable sign of stroke is the sudden change in seniors’ vision. If the seniors are saying that their vision is getting blurred or double vision, it means that the elderly suffered a stroke.

Balancing issues- They lean to one side and drag the foot on the same side they’re leaning towards.
