When an Older Adult Talks About Suicide: Broward County Support

By Silver Sitters

If an older adult says they want to die, take the statement seriously. Families in Broward County do not need to work out the cause or decide how serious it is before seeking help. A conversation about suicide deserves attention even when the person has said similar things before.

Get help without delay

Call 911 if there is an immediate threat to life, an attempt, a suspected overdose or an injury. Stay with the person if it is safe, and follow the emergency operator’s instructions. If you are in danger, move to safety and call for help.

For suicidal thoughts or concern about someone else, call or text 988, or use the chat at 988lifeline.org. The Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available around the clock. You can contact it yourself for guidance on helping a family member.

Listen and ask directly

Ask plainly whether they are thinking about suicide. Let them explain what they are experiencing, without arguing, blaming them or dismissing their feelings. Acknowledge their distress and offer to help them connect with support.

Do not promise secrecy about a suicide plan. Do not postpone the conversation to a scheduled time, treat it as attention-seeking or rely on distraction alone. Involve a crisis professional. If it is safe to do so, reduce access to medicines, weapons and other dangerous items; do not put yourself at risk.

Arrange continuing professional support

A doctor or mental health professional can assess the person’s needs and discuss treatment. Help with arranging the appointment, transportation and follow-up, with the person involved in decisions as much as possible. A relative or home caregiver can offer practical support, but cannot replace crisis care or clinical assessment.

Keep in contact after the immediate conversation. Agree who will check in and how to reach professional help if distress returns. Supporters can also contact 988 when they need guidance.
