Psychological Effect of Hospital Stay On Seniors in Palm Beach County

Impact of Hospital Stays on Palm Beach Seniors' Psyche

No doubt that time spent in the hospital can improve a senior’s physical condition but it can have adverse effects on seniors’ mental health. The research reveals that sometimes treatment at the hospital can result in trauma for seniors in Palm Beach County.

The stress of staying in a hospital and that too for a long period can result in a decline in the physical and mental health of seniors. Instead of speeding up the recovery, it slows down seniors’ recovery.

The research conducted on this reveals that seniors run the risk of cognitive decline during their stay at the hospital. Let’s have an insight into the psychological effects of hospital stays on seniors in Palm Beach County.

Adverse Effects of Hospital Stay on Seniors in Palm Beach County

Loss of independence

Seniors in Palm Beach County may feel that they have no control over their lives during the hospital stay. Seniors might feel that they are losing their independence or do not have a say in their health as the doctors and nurses keep on coming all day. Not only this, but they are also the ones making seniors’ decisions.

Also, seniors in Palm Beach County are not able to pursue their normal routine due to physical limitations. Family members may be there to help but may prevent seniors from doing the things they can do on their own which in turn can make seniors feel losing their independence.

Stress of lingering

Staying in the hospital might seem but is not. Hospital stays can turn out to be life-changing for many seniors in Palm Beach County. It can make seniors feel isolated and the chances are seniors might not feel comfortable as nurses and others keep coming in all day.

The more time the seniors stay in the hospital, the more difficult things get for them afterwards such as resuming their old routine. Most of the seniors forget what was their routine before they got hospitalized.

All of this can cause stress to seniors especially if they have dementia or a severe chronic disease. Some seniors tend to experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which in turn can adversely affect their immune system and delay their recovery.

Decline in physical health

The next psychological effect of hospital stays on seniors is the decline in physical health. Staying in the hospital can spell new health issues for seniors in Palm Beach County and even disabilities.

Seniors tend to become weaker than before as they are bedridden. The research reveals that nearly a third of patients over the age of 70 leave the hospital after a greater disability.

The physical decline in seniors’ health can make them feel depressed, lose their confidence, and also affect their mental health.

Depression and anxiety

It is nothing new and nearly everyone tends to experience depression and anxiety when hospitalized. However, hospitalization brings the risk of chronic physical conditions and a lack of family support for seniors.

The longer the senior in Palm Beach County stays in the hospital, the longer the risk of seniors experiencing depression or anxiety.

Seniors can experience uncertainties around their health, or grow anxious over their health without lots of mental stimulation. Seniors can start to feel lonely and depressed due to hours of boredom and isolation.

Delirium

Delirium refers to the sudden change in seniors’ mental function. Seniors in Palm Beach County suffering from delirium tend to lead to confusion, disorientation, and agitation during the hospital stay.

The adverse effects of delirium tend to have a long-term cognitive decline among seniors. Detecting delirium among seniors can be difficult as seniors might have to go to the ER and in a stressful environment.
