How Do The Sleep Habits Of Seniors Change As They Age In Palm Beach County?

nspp

The sleep needs of a person tend to change throughout a person’s lifetime. It is known to all that children and adolescents need more sleep than adults. Surprisingly, the seniors in Palm Beach County also need the same amount of sleep as younger people i.e. seven to nine hours every night.

But most seniors do not get this amount of sleep every day. The reason behind the same is that seniors have a difficult time sleeping at night in Palm Beach County. The research conducted on the same reveals that seniors take around 30 minutes to fall asleep.

Moreover, the senior’s sleep is not that deep and they often wake up frequently throughout the night due to which they prefer to take a nap in the afternoon. Sometimes, the seniors’ sleep schedule also changes because of age reasons. Many seniors get drowsy early in the evening and wake up the next morning.

The reason behind this could be the production of melatonin. The production of melatonin tends to change with age due to which, the seniors in Palm Beach County tend to become more sensitive to changes in the environment.

Is Poor Sleep Normal In Seniors In Palm Beach County?

The health issues among seniors also tend to affect the sleeping schedule of seniors in Palm Beach County. The research conducted on this reveals that seniors without major medical conditions tend to report better sleep.

Sometimes, poor sleep contributes to additional health issues among seniors such as depression, memory problems, daytime sleepiness, and an increase in nighttime falls. Seniors with sleep issues taking over-the-counter medications or prescription sleep aids can be problematic as well.

Most families believe that poor sleep is a normal part of aging in Palm Beach County but in reality, it is not. But there are healthy adults as well who report no such problem. No doubt that the sleep patterns of seniors change as they age but frequent disturbances in sleep or fatigue are not a normal part of aging. If you are witnessing similar issues with the seniors at home, it’s time to schedule an appointment with the physician regarding the same.
