Why Is Dehydration More Common Among Seniors In Broward County Than Others?

Dehydration among Seniors in Broward: Understanding the Risks

Compared to younger people, maintaining a healthy balance of water and electrolytes is a complex concept for seniors in Broward County. This is why the risk of dehydration among seniors is most likely to occur. The complications can be severe for seniors in Broward County.

According to the study conducted on the same, it is revealed that dehydration is the top reason why seniors get hospitalized. The seniors hospitalized in Broward County due to dehydration can have longer stays in intensive care units and more placement in long-term facilities.

The main reason why seniors have a high risk of dehydration is because they experience several health or lifestyle conditions which in turn lead to low fluid levels. Here are some other reasons indicating why dehydration is more common among seniors in Broward County.

Reasons Why Dehydration Is More Common Among Seniors In Broward County

Physical changes

The prominent reason why dehydration is common among seniors in Broward County is the age-related physical changes in the senior’s body. As seniors age, their body contains less water because their kidneys become less efficient.

Due to the weakened sense of thirst, seniors do not feel the need to drink something. So the main reason seniors in Broward County get dehydrated is because they fail to recognize the signs to take a drink until it’s too late.

The seniors having a reduced sense of thirst may also have difficulties in swallowing or asking others for a drink. Consequently, it’s crucial to monitor the fluid intake of seniors.

Side effects of medications

Most of the the elderly take plenty of medications due to one or the other health issues which in turn can contribute to dehydration. The side effects of medications concerning blood pressure, diabetes, heart medications, antacids, and others should be discussed with senior physicians in Broward County to prevent further dehydration.

Medical issues

Some medical conditions among the elderly in Broward County can also lead to dehydration. Some examples of health issues leading to dehydration include fever, diabetes, and diarrhea.

Living conditions

The elderly in nursing homes are at higher risk of dehydration, often relying on staff for assistance with fluid intake. The seniors at high risk are the ones who are physically able but cognitively impaired, often forgetting to drink. Therefore, it’s crucial for nursing homes and memory care facilities to monitor fluid intake closely and have policies in place to ensure hydration among residents.

Fear of falling

Some seniors also avoid drinking water because they’ll have to get up at night to pee due to which they might fall. In such a case, the best alternative to prevent dehydration would be to avoid drinking water before going to bed. You can also speak to senior physicians in Broward County regarding this.
