Reasons Why Seniors in Palm Beach County Shuffle Their Feet

Why Palm Beach County Seniors Shuffling Their Feet

As seniors age, they start to witness changes in their physical condition, health status, and mobility which in turn can have a drastic effect on seniors walking. One similar change observed among seniors is shuffling their feet.

This phenomenon not only feels strange to families but also to researchers and caregivers. Most people wonder- If it is something to worry about.

Consequently, here are the most common reasons why seniors in Palm Beach County shuffle their feet after a certain age.

Seniors in Palm Beach County Shuffling Their Feet

Lack of flexibility

Some medical conditions such as arthritis make seniors experience stiffness in joints which in turn reduces their flexibility. Such medical conditions among seniors in Palm Beach County tend to affect the range of motion in their hip, knee, and ankle joints which makes it difficult for seniors to take lengthy strides.

Consequently, seniors resort to shuffling their feet because it requires less effort and minimizes discomfort with joint movement. Make seniors do some stretching exercises during the day to help them with flexibility.

Balance issues

Another common issue among seniors in Palm Beach County is balance issues. The health conditions leading to balance issues include heart conditions, stroke, and diabetes. For instance, seniors having nerve issues can find it difficult for seniors to tell what kind of surface it is and they end up shuffling their feet.

Make sure to discuss this with a senior physician and get seniors the proper treatment for the same.

Fear of falling

Seniors in Palm Beach County often shuffle their feet to minimize their risk of falls, thinking that it provides them much-needed support and reduces the likelihood of tripping over uneven surfaces.

This fear of falling becomes more pronounced with age. If seniors continue to shuffle their feet, it can make them prone to weakening leg muscles, reducing flexibility, and making it easier to trip over small obstacles.

Foot problems and pain

Foot problems such as corns, bunions, and arthritis can also make seniors shuffle their feet. These foot problems cause discomfort to seniors and discourage them from walking.

If seniors at your home also report foot problems or pain, then do not hesitate to take them to the doctor and restore their normal walking pattern.

Side effects of medications

Seniors in Palm Beach County often take multiple medications because of their health conditions but hardly do people know that these medications can result in side effects. The side effects of medications typically impact seniors’ mobility and coordination.

Experiencing these side effects can make seniors prone to shuffling their feet as a safety measure to prevent themselves from falling.

Make sure to consult senior physicians regarding the medications they are taking and whether these can have any side effects or not.

Cognitive Decline

Another reason why seniors in Palm Beach County shuffle their feet is that neurological conditions influence seniors’ walking patterns, with diseases such as Parkinson’s, stroke, or peripheral neuropathy affecting nerve function and muscle control, often leading to shuffling feet.

Furthermore, cognitive decline linked to dementia or Alzheimer’s disease adversely affects motor skills and coordination, causing changes in walking patterns. As cognitive functions decline, seniors may resort to shuffling their feet.

Lack of strength

It is known to all that as seniors age, they tend to lose their strength and muscle strength and start shuffling their feet. As seniors get aged, the muscles in their thighs tend to lose mass. This makes it difficult for seniors in Palm Beach County to lift their feet properly for walking.
