Must-Have Vaccines For Seniors In Broward County

Vaccines for Seniors: Protection from viruses & infections | Broward

The research reveals that tens of thousands of seniors in Broward County in the U.S. die from illnesses that could have been easily prevented by vaccines. Developing vaccines has emerged to be one of the best public health advancements in the history of vaccines.

Vaccines are crucial for seniors and other individuals as they go a long way in protecting people from deadly viruses and infections. Getting vaccines empowers seniors to reduce the spread of infectious diseases as well as the community.

Compared to other people, seniors with weak immune systems are more prone to infectious diseases. Consequently, let us learn about the significant vaccines for seniors in Broward County.

Significant Vaccines For Seniors In Broward County

Covid-19

The severity of COVID-19 illness increases with age, making seniors aged 65 and older account for 81% of COVID-19 deaths. To mitigate the risk of hospitalization or death from the virus, seniors must receive all recommended doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines available in fall 2023 are designed not only as boosters but also to protect against the latest variants of the virus, which are widespread and pose a serious risk of re-infection, especially for vulnerable individuals.

Pneumococcal

The next significant vaccine seniors in Broward County should have includes a vaccine against pneumococcal pneumonia for seniors aged 65 or above. Seniors need to get this vaccine at least one time. Once done, seniors have to discuss with their physician whether to get an additional dosage or not.

Shingles

Shingles virus among seniors in Broward County causes chickenpox. Nearly half of the shingles causes are reported among seniors. Fortunately, it’s best to have a shingles vaccine. There are two injections of this which are given two months apart.

Flu

The best defense against the influenza virus and its consequences is getting an annual flu shot. The best time to receive an annual flu shot is in the early fall before the flu season commences. Seniors can have covid-19 and flu vaccines at the same time but if seniors have witnessed some side effects, then waiting for one or two weeks between the vaccines is advisable.
