Why Do Seniors Think Of Suicide In Broward County?

senior suicide

The modern society of these times still has plenty of shortcomings when it comes to issues like aging, mental illness, and death despite progress in other areas. There are plenty of people who think that depression and suffering are part of the aging process due to which, the seniors in Broward County might find it reluctant to ask for help and attempt suicide.

The seniors in Broward County who take up their own lives were less likely to visit a mental health professional when it comes to suicide.

The reasons for committing suicide among seniors vary from individual to individual. However, there are multiple factors involved in the risk of suicide. Consequently, let us learn the reasons why seniors in Broward County think about committing suicide.

Reasons Why Seniors Commit Suicide In Broward County

Depression

One of the biggest risk factors for suicide among the elderly in Broward County is depression. The depressed elderly feel hopelessness or lack of meaning in their lives. They fail to see any goals for the future or any path ahead. Thus treating depression among seniors is highly crucial. However, depression is not the only mental health issue playing a major role in the suicidal behavior of the elderly but pain and discomfort can also make them commit suicide.

Access to lethal means

Seniors with suicidal thoughts are more likely to attempt suicide if the means are easily accessible, with guns involved in 46 percent of all suicides in America.

Detachment

Seniors who feel secluded or disconnected from society may feel detached. The seniors in Broward County can suffer from chronic loneliness or feel ignored by their children or loved ones. The elderly who attempt suicide are often less likely to have children, be married, or engage in religious activities.

Frailty

Another reason why seniors in Broward County attempt suicide is frailty. Feeling weak or tired also makes life difficult and less enjoyable for seniors. The physical illnesses among seniors can also cause permanent debility among seniors which in turn contributes to their sense of despair.

Besides this, other factors that can increase the senior’s risk of suicide include chronic pain, alcohol abuse, divorce, family conflict, physical disability, regret, shame, stubbornness, lack of access to healthcare, and lack of independence.
