Challenges Faced By Seniors In Broward County

Biggest challenges to Seniors in Broward County

Caretaking for seniors in Broward County is not easy as caretakers have to think about both today as well as tomorrow. Fortunately, caregivers can reduce their efforts by getting a clear picture of the challenges to seniors and where to focus their attention.

Consequently, here are six challenges facing the elderly in Broward County and where caregivers should focus. Let us take note of those challenges.

Challenges Seniors In Broward County Are Facing

Poor health and fitness

One of the main challenges seniors in Broward County face these days is poor health and fitness. Seniors require two kinds of physical activity in a week to improve their health. One is aerobics and the other is muscle strengthening. Seniors aged 65 or above should do these exercises five days a week and also follow the guidelines.

Isolation

Seniors in Broward County feeling isolated tends to affect their emotional health. The worst consequences of isolation among seniors include heart attack or stroke. The research reveals that seniors in the U.S. are more likely to be alone than others.

Poor Nutrition

Poor eating habits among seniors can result in various health issues. A significant number of seniors do not consume adequate nutrients, particularly from sources like lean protein, whole grains, low-fat dairy, fruits, and vegetables. Besides this, around 30% of seniors skip at least one meal daily. Insufficient protein intake in seniors leads to sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass, which impacts approximately 30% of adults over 60.

Medication errors

Seniors in Broward County living alone all by themselves at home are considered vulnerable to medication errors. The research reveals that 88.9$ of seniors aged 65 have taken one prescription drug in the past 30 days. Sometimes, seniors end up taking multiple medications for multiple conditions which in turn increases the chances of medication errors. Around 15% of seniors come to hospitals because of improperly taken medications.

Lack of planning

A significant 53% of adult children expect discussions about senior care options with their elderly loved ones to be challenging. Often, without clear communication, many seniors have assumptions or expectations regarding their care. Specifically, 27% anticipate their spouse will care for them, and 20% expect other family members to assume this responsibility.

Risk of scams

Elder scams and abuse are the most obvious challenges seniors in Broward County face these days. The scammers come up with new ways to hurt seniors and steal from them. Consequently, elder abuse among seniors is on the rise.
