Basics Of Applying Sunscreen For Seniors In Broward County

Sunscreen For Seniors

Seniors in Broward County spend most of their time outside in the summer season. Some of the fun activities seniors enjoy doing in summer include baseball games, picnics, family reunions, and trips to new locations.

But hardly do families and seniors in Broward County realize that spending time outside can make their skin burn or lead to skin poisoning.

Seniors grow up at a time when no one knows the benefits of sunscreen. But at present, nearly everyone knows about sunscreen. Like others, seniors in Broward County also need sun protection in winter because of their fragile skin.

Consequently, let us know the basics of sunscreen for seniors and their caregivers.

Sunscreen Basics For Seniors In Broward County

Follow the directions

The biggest mistake seniors make while applying sunscreen is applying too little. Instead of applying a small amount, try to apply it in a thick layer. Besides this, seniors should apply sunscreen every three or four hours as written on the bottle.

Use different formats of Sunscreen For Seniors

The research conducted on sunscreen reveals that there is little difference between sunscreen sticks, creams, gels, and creams. So, the best would be to buy several formats to make it easier for seniors to protect even hard-to-reach spots. Moreover, it is also easy for seniors in Broward County to carry sunscreen sticks with them on walks.

Protects skin from harmful rays

When buying sunscreen, choose a broad-spectrum product to protect against UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays, which constitute 95% of UV radiation, penetrate deep into the skin, while the less prevalent UVB rays are primarily responsible for sunburns and surface skin damage.

Opt for sunscreen with SPF 30

The crucial element of sunscreen is SPF. It is the sunscreen’s SPF that determines if it can absorb the sun’s rays well or not. The sunscreen with SPF 30 is regarded as the best as it absorbs 97% of the rays. Also, ask the seniors to apply it again after three or four hours.

Seniors need sunscreen

Not using sunscreen while outdoors can make the elderly in Broward County prone to skin cancer. The study indicates that nearly half of the deaths taking place due to skin cancer are among seniors aged 65 or above. Consequently, make sure that the elderly wear sunscreen when going out.

Sun damage happens fast

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage skin in just 15 minutes, so seniors need to apply sunscreen for even short outdoor activities like watering plants or picking flowers. UV rays can also pass through glass, so sunscreen is needed when sitting near a big window or driving.
