Top Cancers in the Elderly in Palm Beach County

There is no defined age for catching such a severe disease like cancers in the Elderly. One can develop cancer at any age and it can also affect any part of the body. However, the research conducted on this reveals that nearly 60% of cancers occur in seniors aged 65 or above. 

The most common types of cancer seniors in Palm Beach County are prone to include carcinomas, breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, and pancreatic cancer.

Kinds of Cancer Among Seniors in Palm Beach County 

Prostate Cancer 

Prostate cancer is right below the bladder and is common in men. It is the prostate that is responsible for making fluid that causes the sperm to become healthy. When senior men have prostate cancer, cells in the prostate cancer grow uncontrollably. 

Prostate cancer can be hereditary or acquired. The data conducted on this reveals that 60% of prostate cancer is caused by hereditary disease. Besides this, some factors like diet, age, and testosterone levels also increase the risk of seniors catching prostate cancer. 

Some of the symptoms of prostate cancer among seniors include trouble urinating, blood in the urine, or pain throughout the body.

Lung Cancer 

The next common cancer among seniors in Palm Beach County is lung cancer. The research reveals that 83% of instances of lung cancer are common in seniors aged 65 or above. The reason why seniors are mostly prone to lung cancer is because they are exposed to dangerous chemicals that seniors often breathe. 

The seniors who smoke have higher chances of lung cancer than the ones who don’t. But the ones who don’t smoke but stay near the ones who smoke also run the chances of developing lung cancer. 

Some of the symptoms of lung cancer among seniors in Palm Beach County include bad cough, cough with blood, chest pain, and shortness of breath. You might not notice its symptoms at the outset but if left untreated, it can have a severe effect on seniors’ health. 

Breast cancer 

As the name indicates, breast cancer is a cancer affecting mostly senior women out there. Apart from skin cancer, it is the second most common cancer among senior women in Palm Beach County.

This type of cancer usually develops in the milk ducts but can also develop in glands producing milk. It is usually hereditary but in some cases, it is also developed by factors such as lifestyle.

Some of the symptoms of breast cancer in senior women include a lump in the breast tissue, a change in the breast’s shape or size, skin irritation, or redness. If left untreated, it can spread to other parts of the body and make things worse.

Pancreatic Cancer

Seniors in Palm Beach County are also prone to pancreatic cancer. This type of cancer forms in the pancreas in the abdomen and releases enzymes to help in digestion and blood sugar. Cancer cells begin to form in the ducts of the pancreas and later on, spread to the blood vessels and other parts of the body.

Pancreatic cancer is common among seniors aged 65 years or above. Seniors who smoke or have chronic inflammation, diabetes, or colon cancer are more prone to pancreatic cancer. 

Some of the symptoms of pancreatic cancer among seniors in Palm Beach County include itchy skin, loss of appetite, jaundice, and fatigue. Thus they require daily care.
