Triggers Causing Wandering Among Seniors Suffering From Alzheimer’s In Palm Beach County

Understanding Alzheimer's Wandering in Seniors

Wandering can be a difficult and frightening behavior to manage for the adult children and spouses taking care of seniors with Alzheimer’s in Palm Beach County. The seniors suffering from Alzheimer’s can go long periods without sleeping due to which, the caregivers or family members are always on the lookout for some ways to keep them safe.

The scientists have not been able to pinpoint the exact causes of wandering among seniors with Alzheimer’s in Palm Beach County but it has been found that some circumstances can act as triggers.

Causes Of Wandering Among Seniors With Alzheimer’s In Palm Beach County

The research conducted on this reveals that wandering among seniors with Alzheimer’s is linked to overstimulation and unmet needs. Seniors with Alzheimer’s in Palm Beach County often lack communication skills due to which they are unable to express what they are feeling. This can lead them to head out and find their own solutions to the problem.

Consequently, here are some common triggers and suggestions for managing wandering among seniors with Alzheimer’s in Palm Beach County.

Change in environment

In the later stages of Alzheimer’s disease, seniors in Palm Beach County may become disoriented and try to return to a childhood home or environment, mistaking it for their current residence.

To prevent wandering, it’s advisable to remove items like coats, boots, keys, and other cues near exterior doors that signal them as exits. Installing sliding locks higher up on exterior doors and placing “STOP” signs on doors you want to restrict access to can also help deter wandering, as most people with Alzheimer’s can still understand this command even in advanced stages of the disease.

Agitation

Seniors suffering from Alzheimer’s disease find it difficult to deal with noisy or hectic environments. A noisy or hectic environment makes seniors agitated due to which, they simply want to exit. Seniors being overtired can also make them feel agitated. The best way forward would be to have a quiet place for them so that seniors can stay calm and not leave.

Bathroom reminders

The need to use the bathroom can be another trigger for seniors to wander in Palm Beach County. As seniors age, they find it difficult to recognize their surroundings and find the bathroom due to which they sometimes wander. Consequently, make sure to show them the bathroom in the routine so that they do not wander.

Hunger

Seniors with Alzheimer’s fail to recognize these needs due to which, it becomes important to offer them food and water at regular intervals.
