Medical Conditions That Don’t Permit Driving For Seniors In Broward County

Senior Driving Restrictions: Broward County's Medical Conditions

A significant portion of North American drivers aged 70 and older remain active on the road. According to surveys, approximately 63% of older adults in this age group drive three to five days a week, and over half (56%) cover more than 25 miles per week on average. Due to their old age, there must be senior driving restrictions applied.

Age does not define the senior’s ability to drive but there are certain medical conditions or side effects that indicate that seniors in Broward County should give up the car keys.

Moreover, it becomes difficult for families to convince seniors to refrain from driving as they simply refuse to listen. Consequently, here are some medical conditions to take note of and know that seniors are not fit to drive.

Medical Issues Hindering Driving Among Seniors In Broward County

Medications use

Compared to adults and others, medication usage is higher among seniors in Broward County. Many medications have adverse side effects such as dizziness, hazy vision, fainting, drowsiness, and slowed reaction time. Some of the medications that have been known to cause side effects among seniors include colds, strong painkillers, antidepressants, and antihistamines.

Besides this, the drugs prescribed to treat Alzheimer’s among seniors in Broward County also cause side effects. Make sure to consult with a pharmacist before starting any treatment to figure out whether it may affect seniors’ driving ability or not.

Glaucoma

The next medical condition among seniors that may put a brake on their driving is glaucoma. Glaucoma is likely to cause problems with peripheral vision. Seniors in Broward County with peripheral vision loss can face trouble noticing traffic signs, pedestrians, or other cars on the road which in turn puts the seniors at greater risk.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common eye disease that leads to the deterioration of the macula, a central part of the retina. AMD causes blurred vision and blind spots in the central field of vision, making individuals rely on their peripheral vision for tasks. However, peripheral vision is often less clear and sharp and may not be suitable for activities like driving.

Alzheimer

Seniors in Broward County suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia are likely to lose faculties vital for driving such as coordination, reflexes, eyesight, reaction time, judgment, hearing, and the ability to orient themselves. Thus, it is one of the main reason behind senior driving restrictions.
